Grad transfer De’Monte Buckingham has made an immediate impact at UNCG, averaging team-highs of 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds through 12 games.

It’s quiet on campus now that Winter Break has arrived.

But not all of UNC Greensboro’s students have gone home for the holidays just yet.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will spend the rest of December wrapping up their non-conference schedules and tuning up for the start of all-important Southern Conference play.

MEN’S TEAM

The men’s team got off to a strong start, going 7-2 in the season’s first month. The Spartans (8-4) wrapped up a three-game road trip Thursday night with a 62-51 victory at NCAA Tournament darling Maryland-Baltimore County.

Senior Kaleb Hunter averages 7.5 points per game.

UNCG’s De’Monte Buckingham, a 6-foot-4 guard, has made an immediate impact as a graduate transfer. Buckingham has started all 12 games so far. He averages team-highs of 13.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game, and he’s shooting 42.9 percent from the 3-point line.

Bas Leyte, a 6-foot-10 junior forward, averages 9.0 points per game and has emerged as an offensive threat, scoring in double-figures in four of his last seven games.

The G returns home for its final non-league game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 21, when the Spartans host Johnson & Wales at Fleming Gym.

UNCG plays its SoCon opener on Dec. 29 at Western Carolina. The Spartans then host Wofford at 5 p.m. on New Year’s Day at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Since the start of the 2016-17 season, UNCG has won 133 games, the most among all Southern Conference teams.

WOMEN’S TEAM

UNCG heads to Davidson on Saturday for its final road game of 2021, and then the Spartans close out their non-conference schedule with three games at home in Fleming Gym

The Spartans split two games this past week, winning 66-56 at Maryland-Eastern Shore, then losing a 52-49 heartbreaker against Elon on Wednesday.

Those games started a busy stretch for the Spartans (4-7 overall), who play four more non-league games before their SoCon opener Jan. 6 at Furman.

Versatile veteran Aja Boyd averages 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds for UNCG.

UNCG will host three of those non-conference games at Fleming Gym:

  • UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22
  • Davis & Elkins College at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30
  • Johnson C. Smith at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2

The Spartans’ lone remaining road game of the calendar year is 4 p.m. Dec. 18 at Davidson.

Isys Grady, a 5-foot-11 freshman guard, has started all 11 games so far for UNCG and averages a team-high 11.3 points to go along with 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

Aja Boyd, a 6-foot-2 guard/forward who returned as a grad student, averages 8.4 points and 5.9 rebounds. Sophomore center Khalis Cain averages 8.3 points, a team-high 8.3 rebounds and her 13 blocked shots ranks second among SoCon players.
