Gilliam with his rand raised at installation

Dr. Franklin D. Gilliam, Jr. was installed as UNCG’s 11th chancellor during a ceremony held in UNCG Auditorium Friday.

“It’s a tremendous honor to stand in the footprints of 10 previous chancellors,” he said. “I’m humbled by their legacy and indebted to them for creating a strong foundation.”

Gilliam was officially conferred the responsibilities of the office of chancellor and was presented with the university symbols: the seal, ring, mace, flag, bell and chain of office.

With a nod to its legacy and a focus on the future, Gilliam briefly presented his vision for the university, focusing on accessibility, service and excellence in teaching.

“The future is bright,” he said. “Together, we can shape our shared fate. Together, we can take giant steps.”

Colleagues and friends of the university joined Gilliam at the Weatherspoon Art Museum after the ceremony for a celebration.
