April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The Campus Violence Response Center and Housing and Residence Life will be hosting Denim Day on April 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Moran Commons Fountain.

Students, faculty, and staff that come by in their denim will receive prizes and other free gear.

This campaign began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court. A sexual assault conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her harmdoer take them off – implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work in solidarity with the survivor.

Since then, survivors and allies all over the world wear denim on the last Wednesday of Sexual Assault Awareness Month to show solidarity for survivors.

Faculty and staff who wear denim on April 27 can either stop by the fountain or send a picture of their denim to Gabriella Neyman at gmneyman@uncg.eduto. They will receive a sticker showing their support for survivors on campus.
