Dr. Cerise Glenn receives book award

Dr. Cerise L. Glenn received the 2021 Outstanding Book Award from the Organization of the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender for her book “Womanist Ethical Rhetoric: A Call for Liberation and Social Justice in Turbulent Times,” co-edited with Dr. Annette D. Madlock and published by Lexington Books as part of the Rhetoric, Race, and Religion series.

Glenn is an associate progressor in the Department of Communication Studies. Her research focuses on cultural identity and identity negotiation, African-American communication and culture, occupational socialization and identification of diverse groups, organizational culture, third wave/intersectional feminism.

“Womanist Ethical Rhetoric: A Call for Liberation and Social Justice in Turbulent Times,” analyzes discourses of religious rhetoric and its influence on Black women’s aims for voice, empowerment, and social justice. The chapters also explore identity and empowerment, Black women’s leadership and activism, including in church organization structures and in popular culture, the role of Black churches in Black Lives Matter, and the inclusion of all Black women in racial academic achievement gaps.
