Dr. Jeffrey Soles (Classical Studies) received new funding from the Loeb Classical Library Foundation for the project “Greek-American Excavation at Mochlos, 2021-2022.”

The Greek-American synergasia at Mochlos will complete excavation of structures in three areas on the island of Mochlos belonging to four different periods, two belonging to the Minoan occupation of the site in the Middle Minoan II and Late Minoan IB periods, the 19th and 15th centuries BC, and two to the later Greek occupation in the 7th and 5th centuries. Some excavation and work on their publication has already begun on all four buildings. The project has formulated hypotheses about each, but these can only be tested along with the research questions they pose when their excavation has been completed. One building raises the question of memory and the role it played in antiquity, another addresses the question of how ancient societies organized craft production, and three address questions of political organization during transitional phases of societal development.
