Dr. Kristine Lundgren (Communication Sciences and Disorders) received new funding from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the project ” Exceptional Children State Deaf/Hard of Hearing Research Consultant (2021-2022).”

UNC Greensboro will provide a range of professional services for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction during August 1, 2021 – April 30, 2022. The services provided for the Exceptional Children Division of the State Department of Public Instruction will be carried out by UNC Greensboro’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

The services include: providing assistance in the areas of speech, language, hearing, and literacy abilities of students who are deaf and hard of hearing, their teachers, and related service providers; and providing direct assistance to the Exceptional Children Division of the Department of Public Instruction for deaf/hard of hearing as required by Session Law 119-2013 HB 317, and as part of the total effort on behalf of students with disabilities and in keeping with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Delivery of the services will be carried out by a faculty member (TBD) in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at UNC Greensboro. This faculty member will meet one time per month at a minimum with Department of Public Instruction staff to provide an oral report of the HB 317 data collection process for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
