Students looking to expand their professional network and identify a pathway into their desired profession should attend Career & Professional Development events.
“I had a phenomenal experience with the Spring Virtual Career Fair my senior year,” says Brooklyn Mounce ’22, an Entrepreneurship major. “I was able to sign up to speak with companies that were of interest to me and schedule one-on-one discussions about my experience and how that would fit in with each company. It was also a great opportunity to practice my elevator pitch.”
Mounce, like many students who attend Career & Professional Development events, secured an internship with one of the companies that participated in the spring fair and several months later accepted their offer of a full-time position.
The Fall Virtual Career Fair, organized by UNCG’s Career and Professional Development team, is September 28th from 1-4:30 p.m. via the Handshake platform. Like the spring session, the Career Fair promises UNCG students and alumni an exceptional opportunity to connect with world-class employers offering full-time and internship opportunities.
Virtual Fair Promotes Accessibility
The virtual format of this signature, all-majors recruiting event allows for maximum accessibility and convenience for students and employers alike. “It was a great adaptation going from in-person to virtual,” says Brooklyn, who also attended last fall’s in-person event. “There are pros and cons to both formats,” but the virtual event made her feel “more at ease” because she was able to prepare questions and information about the companies easily accessible for reference during interviews. “It allowed me to feel more prepared and put together overall.”
The Handshake recruiting platform makes registering for the event straightforward. After registering, students use the platform to learn about participating companies and their available opportunities. “I was able to view each company on Handshake and pick the ones I wanted to speak with,” says Mounce, “then Handshake automatically blocks time on my schedule.”
The Fall Virtual Career Fair is a highly productive event for UNCG students at any level. Many Career Fair attendees are graduate students or in their final two undergraduate years, but Mounce points out that “the career fair is for all.” She explains, “I attended every career fair I could while I was in college and the more I did it, the more comfortable I felt each time. It’s a great resource that is essential to elevating your personal brand.”
A Look At Last Year’s Spring Fair
The 110 employers who attended the spring session were diverse in industry – from education, finance, and technology to healthcare and automotive – and students can expect the same this fall.
These companies engaged with prospective candidates via 30-minute virtual information sessions, as well as 10-minute 1:1 conversations with pre-selected students. “We loved the communication from the university, and many students registered for 1:1 interviews,” said an employer who was happy with the results of the event. In all, the spring event was attended by 815 students who had 1,116 interactions with employers.
