Julia Jackson-Newsom transition

Posted on August 18, 2021

After 14 years of service, Julia Jackson-Newsom is leaving UNCG to work as the senior advisor to the president for her alma mater, Wake Forest University. Her last day at UNCG is September 3.

For the past six years, she has served as associate vice chancellor for strategy and policy for Chancellor Gilliam, after working as a senior administrator in the School of Education and Office of Research and Engagement. She has been a strategic thought partner on the Chancellor’s Council and has provided leadership on policy development, Title IX, and of course COVID-19, where she showed exceptional leadership the past 18 months, working with Zach Smith, Director of Emergency Management, to lead the various working groups on our multilayered and complex response to Shield Our Spartans. Her ability to lead and manage a response to a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic has truly been inspiring. For her efforts, she was this year’s staff recipient of the Gladys Strawn Bullard Award, which is given to those who show commendable initiative and perseverance in their leadership and service roles. She will be missed.

This change provides an opportunity to realign our organization. Murphie Chappell, Title IX coordinator, and the Title IX office will be moving under the General Counsel’s Office, which will be expanded to handle institutional integrity and compliance, a model that is becoming a best practice in higher education.

Andrew Cagle, Director of State and External Affairs, and Nikki Baker, Director of Federal and External Affairs, will report to Waiyi Tse, Chief of Staff.

Zach Smith will continue to lead the core COVID-19 operational team, who have been handling many of the key COVID-related policy and protocol issues. Provost Debbie Storrs, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Cathy Akens, and Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Jeanne Madorin will continue to handle operational team leadership roles related to COVID-19 strategy and policy in their respective areas. Zach Smith will continue to report to the Chancellor’s Council.
