New opportunities for evolving fields

UNCG students Clara Lampkin and Lora Mouna sing in a contemporary music band at the 2022 NC Folk Festival.

The new BFA in Studio Art, Concentration in Animation explores a whole range of creative expression and opportunities in the field of animation. Students learn everything from concept art, character design, and storyboarding, all the way through production and the latest in 3D modeling and CGI animation. This exciting new program makes space for diverse expression, culminating in a yearlong capstone experience developing a project from concept all the way through to a production-quality animated short. At the end of the program, students are ready for professional opportunities in animation, concept art, motion graphics, and much more.

A different kind of cutting-edge creative expression centers the new Bachelor of Music in Performance, Concentration in Popular Music and Technology (PopTech). Designed for young musicians and performers in any genre of music, this program takes core individual study in voice or instrument, then adds deep-dive courses in music tech, improvisation, musicianship, and music history, with a focus on contemporary popular genre work — whether it’s rap, country, rock, pop, EDM, salsa, or more. PopTech students can be singers, rappers, producers, DJs, sound engineers, and many more types of artistic professionals, gaining a deeper understanding of their musical passions along with practical, in-depth exploration of the latest in music technology and production.

Another new undergrad offering is the B.S. in Information Science, Concentration in Information Analytics. Big Data is an ever-growing force shaping how business and society runs, and there’s never been a more important time – or a greater need – for information science professionals who can understand, analyze, and work with data. Building on the information science foundations of understanding information use and behavior, data literacy, information ethics and policy, and much more, the information analytics concentration goes deeper, exploring data visualization, analytics, and the latest trends and issues in the information field. Designed to create highly knowledgeable information science professionals, information analytics offers numerous career-focused development opportunities, leading to a work experience practicum that helps provide a bridge into a dynamic, high-demand career.

For more on these new concentrations and all that UNCG has to offer, encourage students to attend the next Fall Open House on Saturday, November 12.
