Next Generation Web Presence project update

Posted on February 08, 2021

A new, better website is coming to UNCG. Launched in Spring 2020, the Next Generation Web Presence (NGWP) project has since completed focus groups, developed a new web strategy, adopted a new information architecture and new wireframes for pages, and more, thanks to hundreds of collaborators from across the University.

Guided by the Web and Mobile Operating Committee (WAMO), the goal of the project is to redefine, redesign, and reimagine the UNCG web presence in order to build the next generation user experience, targeting prospective students first.

In Fall 2020, current University web content and technical leads were asked to begin reviewing their existing websites and audit their respective content, a process known as the Redundant, Outdated, or Trivial (ROT) exercise. Only those sites identified by the NGWP as currently hosting content for the new UNCG.edu were included in the exercise. As units complete their ROT reviews by March 31, 2021, new content and web development teams consisting of individuals from across the University will begin their work. Together, the content and technical teams will prepare for the migration and subsequent launch of the new UNCG website in Fall 2021.

But first, in collaboration with the UNCG Cross-Functional Marketing and Communications Team, web page designs will be developed and adopted. The Cross-Functional Team is composed of the communication and marketing directors within the colleges, schools, and business units. Under the leadership of the NGWP and Cross-Functional Team, nearly 20 web page types continue to undergo multiple design renderings. Similar to the information architecture, the web page designs are being developed with prospective students as the primary audience. The University home page and campus life page designs have been finalized and other web page designs within the future website are expected to be complete in the coming weeks.

The website project has reached the phase where any new, desired websites are to be reviewed by ITS to ensure a timely incorporation with the NWGP. In the coming months, content teams will begin their work, quality assurance testing will begin, and details regarding the migration plan and web training will be communicated. How can you get involved? Connect with your communication and marketing directors and web technical leads. If you have questions for the NGWP team, reach out via email at nextgenweb@uncg.edu.

A discussion of the NGWP project will take place at the Faculty Senate meeting on Feb. 24, 2021 at 3 p.m. You can join the virtual session here.
