The post below has been updated to include additional pop up shop event information, as well as a video from the Friday night grand opening event.

UNC Greensboro will open a special pop up shop in downtown Greensboro this Friday, Nov. 30, in conjunction with the annual Festival of Lights celebration.

The UNCG Pop Up Shop will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays through Dec. 22 and will sell Spartan gear and other items – ideal for shoppers purchasing gifts for the holidays. The shop will be located at 300-B South Elm St., between the Wrangler Store and Scuppernong Book Store.

The grand opening event on Friday will feature free UNCG swag, arts activities for kids, the Instrument Petting Zoo, and an appearance by UNCG’s Spirit Squads. Men’s basketball tickets will be available for purchase from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, as well as on other select dates.

Throughout the month, special discounts will be available to shoppers who follow UNCG on Twitter and Instagram and have the Barnes & Noble app. UNCG employees will receive a discount on most merchandise by showing their Spartan ID.

According to Jeff Shafer, vice chancellor for strategic communications, the shop is a way for UNCG to reach out to prospective students, alumni, and the greater Greensboro community.

“The shop gives us a really powerful presence to showcase the best of UNCG and celebrate Spartan pride in one of the coolest areas of our hometown,” Shafer said. “Even more, we know 35,000 Spartan alumni live within 25 miles of campus, and certainly many of them shop downtown during the holidays.”

UNCG worked with Downtown Greensboro Inc. (DGI) to bring the pop up shop concept to Elm Street.

“A primary goal for Downtown Greensboro is to engage our area colleges and universities. Our collaboration with UNCG has grown over the last few years, and this pop up store is symbolic of deep connections that have been created between UNCG and downtown,” said Zack Matheny, DGI president. “We are excited to have this presence on Elm Street, and can’t wait to see UNCG parents, students, staff, alumni, and fans visit the store. DGI looks forward to many more innovative projects with UNCG and all of Greensboro’s education institutions.”

UNCG plans to host a variety of special events at the shop location in the coming weeks. On Thursday, Dec. 13, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Chancellor Gilliam, Men’s Basketball Coach Wes Miller, and Women’s Basketball Coach Trina Patterson will be on hand to greet Spartan fans and give away UNCG swag.
