021010NewsAndNotes_SoccerStarIf Spartan Athletics fans thought they recognized the rising country music singer performing at SpartanFest and singing a pre-game “God Bless America,” they were right. The singer was Karla Davis, who graduated in media studies in 2008.

Last month, she won the national Colgate Country Showdown title at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Each year, more than 50,000 artists compete in local competitions, all hoping to advance their way to the ultimate title. She did it. The finals were hosted by former winner LeAnn Rimes.

As a member of the women’s Spartan soccer team, Davis was a four-year starter and led the Spartans to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. She twice earned all-conference honors and was also named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 2004. She was a part of three SoCon regular-season championship teams and one SoCon Tournament championship squad. Davis ranks 10th in school history in career assists.
