UNC Greensboro is proud to celebrate our transfer students this week as a part of National Transfer Student Week from October 17-21. Transfer students make up around half of UNCG’s graduating class each year, and more than 1,700 new transfer students are admitted every fall. We could not be UNCG without our transfer students.

National Transfer Student Week is just one way that UNCG builds awareness of the barriers that may appear during the transfer process, as well as the diverse student needs and identities within the transfer student population.

Resources such as the Tau Sigma National Honors Society and the Transfer2Transfer mentorship program are just a few of the ways transfer students living on campus can gain leadership opportunities while connecting to other students.

Here are six special pieces of advice to our transfer students from Assistant Directors of Transfer Recruitment, Melissa Garrison and Taylor Holland.

1. Research & Explore

“Research major options as UNCG offers many majors of discovery – Consumer, Apparel, and Retail Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Nutrition, Interpreter Preparation, and Esports Management. There are so many areas of study for students to explore.” – Garrison

UNCG is home to many different activities and programs that allow students to engage in several areas of interest while networking with fellow peers and professors to ensure the best outcome with their academic pursuits. Just browsing the UNCG website can give students several ideas on the direction of their academic journey.

2. Visit

“Daily campus tours, transfer tours, Open House, Bilingual Spanish campus tours – nothing replaces a campus visit.” – Garrison

Being on UNCG campus is an experience of its own. Visiting UNCG allows students to see the events happening on campus, see the landscaping, and help contribute to a greater sense of Spartan Pride.

3. Apply Early

“It gives us time to request additional information, if needed, and allows time for the next steps to enroll. Don’t forget to file the FAFSA if you are interested in aid.” – Garrison

If you’re still on the fence about applying to UNCG as a transfer student, give it a shot! UNCG is passionate about supporting our transfer students during their transition, and applying early helps give us and you the opportunity to get more resources in terms of an advisor and aid.

4. Get Connected

“Participate in clubs and organizations once you transfer. Not sure what to join? Attend Fall Kickoff. Living on campus? There is special interest housing for transfer students called Connect.” – Garrison

You are not alone as a transfer student on campus. Please enjoy the connection events that UNCG plans specifically for transfer students so you can have a community of people that support your journey and goals.

5. Use Your Resources

“It’s never too early to check in with Career and Professional Development to explore internship options and career planning.” – Garrison

Internship options, career planning, financial aid, advisors, professional development, clubs, any and everything you need to succeed is here at UNCG. Don’t hesitate to ask. UNCG is happy to be a supporter of the transfer student on campus and strives to bring as much peace and ease to your journey as possible.

6. Embrace Opportunities on and Beyond campus

“Taking advantage of the possibilities of adding internships, research, and study abroad programs during their time with us.” – Holland

The city of Greensboro has around 45,000 other college students which leads to so much to do in downtown. Keep your eyes peeled for college events and festivals happening throughout the school year that can help increase your network and resources. At UNCG, students can make connections and be offered internships with local companies through the Career and Professional Development office.
