UNCG’s Weatherspoon Art Museum is kicking off its 75th anniversary in style with a “First Toast” celebration this Thursday, Jan. 7, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the museum.

The toast marks 75 years to the day since Gregory Ivy opened the Weatherspoon Art Gallery within the Department of Art. Weatherspoon members, current and past board members, funders, city and county officials and members of the UNCG community, among others, are invited guests to this celebration.

The event will feature live 1940s music by UNCG’s own Martha Bassett ’96 MM, along with a performance by the Piedmont Swing Dance Society. Nancy Doll, director of the museum, will make remarks at 6 p.m.

“A toast is always a celebratory event,” Doll said. “This seemed like an opportune time to raise a glass to Greg Ivy and all the many people, past and present, who have helped the Weatherspoon accomplish what it has throughout its history.”

The First Toast is one of several events that will be held throughout the year to commemorate the 75th anniversary. The museum will feature eight signature anniversary exhibitions this year, including a collection of original drawings by Henri Matisse, and will hold its 75th Anniversary Gala on Saturday, Oct. 1.

“The community has played an important role in the museum’s success from the very beginning,” Doll said. “The 75th poses the perfect opportunity for us to take stock of where we are and to envision where we want to be in the next 10 to 15 years.”
