“Poetry without Borders:” A Celebration of Words” will be held Friday, October 13, 2017.

The purpose of the 2017 Celebration of Words is to bring together the creative side of all the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures students and faculty. Organizers will highlight LLC’s diversity and common love and respect for languages. They  will inquire about the creative and artistic aspect of words. The 2017 Celebration of Words will focus on poetry and its connections to the visual arts, specifically photography.

  • Breakfast: 8-9 am, EUC
  • Morning and early afternoon sessions: 9 am-3 pm, EUC
  • Afternoon event 3-5 pm followed by a reception at 5 pm, Virginia Dare Room (Alumni House)

  • Reading by distinguished retirees Roch Smith, Dr. Ramiro Lagos and Dr. Mark Smith-Soto, Veronica Grossi (UNCG) and Nathalie Dupont (Bucknell University)
  • Presentation of LLC’s multilingual poetry magazine International Poetry Review by Dr. Kathleen Macfie 
  • Presentation of the Most Poetic Word in Each Language contest  Faculty Poetry Recital in original language and English translation

LLC’s Global Village Living Learning Community will also actively participate in the event. LLC will hold a poetry contest titled “The Most Poetic Word in Each Language” to engage students in the days preceding the event and on the day of the event. On October 13th, they have reserved 8 rooms in the EUC so students will have the chance to visit and participate in several poetry workshops from 9 am-3 pm.
